Working for us

Work experience

Poole Hospital has an established work experience scheme in place, which is open to students aged between 15 and 19 who attend local schools and colleges. We are sometimes able to provide a placement for those individuals who have left full time education and are considering a new career in the NHS.

Work experience is unpaid, usually for half a day up to a maximum of three weeks, with opportunities ranging from medical placements on wards, to non-medical placements in offices.

It gives students a ‘taste’ of what to expect from their chosen career. Students will not be able to carry out any clinical procedures themselves; but will observe our staff carrying out their day-to-day duties.

Before considering applying for one of these positions, please note:

  • The maternity unit and children's unit do not offer shadowing. Theatres only allow students to shadow after the age of 17.
  • Poole Hospital does not accept students under the age of 16 for general ward-based placements, or any placement with patient contact. However, 15 year old students can help in office areas, such as fundraising, the Patient Experience Centre and the Postgraduate Centre. We can only accept a small number of students at 15 each year.
  • There are a limited number of work experience placements across the trust, so we are not able to guarantee a placement to everyone who applies.

Please note: We need at least eight weeks' notice to organise a placement and process the necessary paperwork. Please bear this in mind when providing your preferred dates.

How to arrange work experience

Before submitting an application for work experience, read the information above thoroughly.

To apply you will need to complete an application form telling us about the type of work experience shadowing you are seeking. You will also need to submit proof of immunisations at the time of submitting your application. You can obtain these from your GP and we will require you to have had your MMR vaccination in order to be able to complete a placement in the hospital which must be present on your proof of immunisations.

If you need to send your work experience form by email please ensure that you have condensed the document size before sending it. Your parent or guardian (if under 18) will need to sign your application. Your tutor must also provide a short reference.

Try to think about your personal objectives, skills you would like to develop and what you want to learn. This way, we can identify a placement that meets these needs.
