Working for us

Work experience

The trust has an established work experience scheme in place, which is open to students aged between 15 and 19 who attend local schools and colleges.

Work experience is unpaid, usually for one or two weeks, with opportunities ranging from medical placements on wards, to non-medical placements in offices at the hospital.

It gives students a ‘taste’ of what to expect from a chosen career, which could help the decision to pursue a career in a given field.

Students will not be able to carry out any clinical procedures themselves; but will observe our staff carrying out their day-to-day duties.

Before considering applying for one of these positions, please note:

  • The maternity unit, theatres and porters do not accept work experience students
  • The trust does not accept students under the age of 16 for general ward-based placements, or any placement with patient contact. However, these students can take advantage of placements in office areas, such as fundraising, the health information centre and the postgraduate centre. The trust does not accept students under the age of 18 for placements in paediatrics

There are a limited number of work experience placements across the trust, so we are not able to guarantee a placement to everyone who applies.

We need up to three months’ notice to organise a placement and process the necessary paperwork.

How to arrange work experience

Before submitting an application for work experience, read the information above thoroughly.

To apply you will need to complete an application form telling us about the type of work experience you are looking for.

Please do not return your work experience form by email as it needs to be signed by yourself, your parent or guardian (if under 18) and also your tutor. Please print a copy and send it to the address in the contact us box on the right hand side of the page.

Try to think about your personal objectives, skills you would like to develop and what you want to learn. This way, we can identify a placement that meets these needs.

We don't automatically acknowledge an application, but if you'd like to check your application has been received, please call Joy Janati, voluntary services coordinator, using the number on the right hand side of the page.
