A theatre career
Our theatre services provide dedicated care to patients
requiring surgical intervention across a number of specialities.
- General surgery
- Head and neck
- Orthopaedic trauma
We have thirteen operating theatres – eight
main theatres, three day theatres and two obstetric theatres. With
a dedicated laparoscopic theatre, this technique is used
extensively in general and gynaecology surgery.
Our teams comprise a range of disciplines,
including registered nurses, operating department practitioners and
theatre support workers.
We have programmes in place to support
registered nurses with little or no experience of perioperative
care to graduate from novice to expert.
We also support student operating department
practitioners through their diploma in HE in partnership with
Theatre support workers generally have no
previous experience and a comprehensive training programme ensures
competence. We have recently introduced the Care Certificate for
all support workers that now join our team.
We actively support staff development and
career progression. There are a range of ways to undertake
training, including online and bidding for Continual Professional
Development units with our local universities.
Perioperative care is evolving with newer
techniques in combination with new technology which allows all of
our teams to continue to update skills and indeed to learn new
