About Professor Khashu

Professor Khashu is clinical lead for the neonatal service at Poole Hospital and a visiting professor at Bournemouth University.

Professor Khashu’s experience in paediatrics and neonatology spans nearly 20 years, including three years’ fellowship in neonatology in one of the largest and busiest neonatal centres in the world.

He has been involved with national work in neonatology through BAPM and the Department of Health, and is a member of the academic board and nutrition committee of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

He has been a member of the clinical leaders network in the South West and was also a member of the top leaders programme for the South West Strategic Health Authority.

Professor Khashu is also visiting professor at the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal and Perinatal Health School of Health and Social Care, at Bournemouth University.

He has specialist registration in both paediatrics and neonatal medicine, and has had more than 30 presentations in international scientific meetings, and 20 publications in international peer reviewed journals.

Professor Khashu is also an expert reviewer for major journals in paediatrics, neonatology and nutrition, and the Oxford University Press

Academics/Research/Innovation:

Visiting Professor of Perinatal Health, Bournemouth University.

Research collaboration and supervision of PhD student on ‘Fatty Acids in the Perinatal Period: pregnant mothers, term and preterm newborns.’

Input into curriculum development and supervision of midwifery PhD student.

Expert reviewer for NIHR for various neonatal/perinatal research proposals and for HTC grants.

Expert reviewer for multiple high impact journals including BMJ , Pediatrics, Neonatology (formerly "Biology of the Neonate") , American Journal of Perinatology, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, BioMed Central Pregnancy and Childbirth, Indian Paediatrics and book reviewer for Oxford University Press on Neonatology, Perinatal Health, Leadership, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.

Founder of SIGNEC (Special interest group NEC) and organiser of annual International conference on NEC in London. This has been very well received by clinicians, researchers, parents and neonatal charities.

Development of innovative models of practice to improve Transfers of care and Handover as Faculty lead for the Patient Safety Collaborative at Wessex AHSN.

As member of clinical advisory board of The Morgan Leary Vaughan Fund USA, I supported their successful application to NORD USA for the Natural History Study Registry Project for NEC.

National roles & responsibilities

BAPM: Development of national guidance, Representative of BAPM to RCOG for Maternity Standards Working Group, Representative of BAPM to National Steering group on Safety in Maternity Care (HEE & NHS England)

RCPCH: Member of multiple national committees, Represented RCPCH at NHS England for the Acute Vanguard National Assessments

NHS England Specialised Commissioning: Senate member on national neonatal CRG from South of England.

SIGNEC: Founder and organiser of special interest group and annual international conference in London

Plenary and keynote speaker on neonatal,/perinatal issues, QI, patient safety, leadership, innovation and large scale healthcare  transformation.
