MP recognises outstanding achievement

Continence care Robert Syms MP visited Poole Hospital last week to learn more about an innovative approach to clinical care that earned the hospital’s physiotherapists national recognition at the 2014 National Continence Care Awards.

The hospital’s physiotherapy service was named ‘highly commended’ in the Continence Care Team category at the awards for its patient-focused approach to pelvic floor clinics.

The innovation of joint physiotherapist/consultant pelvic floor clinics has transformed the trust’s delivery of care to patients. A multi-disciplinary team (MDT) was developed to improve collaboration and has been the inspiration for the team of specialist physiotherapists to set up ‘FAST’ (Fast Assessment Start Treatment) which was highly commended in the 2013 NHS innovation challenge award.

Robert Syms said: "I was very impressed with the team working and the fact that the advances they made have been nationally recognised by awards. This is Poole Hospital at its best.”

The award-winning Poole Hospital Continence Care service consists of Mr Andrew Clarke and Mr Mukhtar Ahmad (consultant colorectal surgeons), Dr Dave Tarver (consultant radiologist), Mr Tim Hillard (consultant uro-gynaecologist), Dr Steve Perring (medical physicist), Jan Jones (bowel specialist nurse), Sally Sheppard and Ann Henderson (specialist physiotherapists) and Dr Sally Parry (consultant gastroenterologist).

Explaining the reason behind the success of the Poole Continence Care service, Sally Sheppard said: “The MDT has kept the best outcome for the patient as its focus and our strength has been setting up our service so that key clinicians work together. This way we have a better understanding of each other’s clinical skills and the patient pathway has been improved.”

Mandy Baker, assistant director of nursing added: “At Poole Hospital, we are committed to improving efficiencies whist enhancing patient care.  This is a great example of a new innovative way working together. The recognition of such innovation that increases the quality of patient care without increased cost is certainly something to be proud of.”
