Dementia patients at Poole Hospital to benefit from £20,000 donation

dignityPatients with dementia at Poole Hospital are set to benefit from a generous donation of £20,000 thanks to the fundraising efforts of three cyclists from Poole who travelled 500km across Costa Rica.

Dignity in Dementia is a pioneering charity project to support Poole Hospital patients with dementia by making improvements to the physical environment in areas of the hospital which provide care to patients with dementia.

Cyclists Amanda Colman, Penny Jarvis and Mark Skelton set out on a 500km ride across Costa Rica that took them a week to complete. They crossed rivers, beat the humidity and rode across tough terrain to raise £20,000 for the fund - which was double their initial target.

Penny Jarvis said: “It was like joining the marines for a week, it was painful; Amanda had heat stroke at one point and Mark cracked a rib but they both carried on. It was a fantastic adventure and we enjoyed almost every minute.”

“We thank everyone so much for their support for this very important cause. We all funded ourselves on this trip but the sponsorship spurred us on through the toughest parts of this adventure.”

The money raised will be used to fund the refurbishment of the day room in Lytchett Ward which supports patients with dementia, the purchase of a selection of artwork and an enclosed garden will be created specifically for dementia patients.

Physical environment can make a huge difference to patients with dementia for example, by aiding independence, encouraging interaction and speeding recovery from illness.

The trust fund will now be opened out to areas that regularly care for people with dementia outside the hospital’s elderly care wards including orthopaedic and surgical wards.

Angela Schofield, Poole Hospital chairman said: “I thank the cyclists and those behind the scenes for their tremendous efforts and what they have done for the hospital.”
