Clinical research at Poole Hospital is celebrated

Poole Hospital seen from Poole ParkA new league table published this week by the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network shows that Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are spearheading a new trend for clinical research.

The league table shows the number of studies undertaken by each NHS trust from April 2013 to March 2014, and the number of patients who volunteered to take part in clinical research.

At Poole Hospital, we increased the number of studies we are recruiting patients for from 83 in 2012/13 to 91 in 2013/14; in addition, the hospital has a large number of studies ongoing which patients have already been recruited for, and has a total of over 300 studies in progress at any one time.

Clinical research is a vital part of the work of the NHS, and provides evidence about “what works” so that treatments for patients can be improved. In addition, there is research evidence to show that patients do better in hospitals and surgeries that do research – even if they don’t actually take part in a study themselves

Dr Angus Wood, clinical lead for research at Poole Hospital said: “As a forward-looking trust, we are committed to participating in clinical research and supporting the ongoing development of better healthcare. Our expert clinical staff spearhead studies across a wide range of areas, from cancer and cardiology to rheumatology and neurology, with the potential to benefit a huge number of patients.”

Jonathan Sheffield is Chief Executive Officer of the NIHR Clinical Research Network. He said:

“It’s great to see a real appetite for research in Poole. I would like to thank all the patients and carers who have taken part in research, and thereby made a contribution to improving NHS treatments for everyone.”

“I would also like to congratulate the trusts in Poole for increasing their number of studies. We know that research is something that patients really value and these Trusts are creating the opportunities for patients to get involved.”
