Poole Hospital maternity staff win national awards

Poole Hospital started the year celebrating the hard work of three maternity staff who won national awards from The Royal College of Midwives' in recognition of their outstanding work in the field, read more at

Also in January, AFC Bournemouth chairman Jeff Mostyn visited the Dorset Cancer Centre to take a tour of the hospital’s state-of-the-art radiotherapy department and found out more about the cutting edge treatments available locally for men with prostate cancer.


Long Service Awards 2014

In February the Poole Hospital Long Service Awards were held celebrating more than 60 staff who represented an incredible 1,600 years of NHS service.


Haven Suite welcomes its first baby

In March Rory Broom was the first baby to be born in the newly refurbished Haven birthing suite. Rory's mum Hayley said: “My husband and I are delighted that our beautiful boy is the first baby to christen the new facilities at the Haven Suite – thank you to all the wonderful team and the fantastic care after his delivery."

Poole Hospital Staff Awards 2014

The Poole Hospital Staff Awards were also celebrated in March. Around 120 attendees, including the mayor and mayoress of Poole, heard moving tributes from patients and their families about the care they and their loved ones had received in the past 12 months.


Debbie Fleming takes up post as the new chief executive

Poole Hospital's new chief executive Debbie Fleming took up her post in April taking over from former chief excutive Chris Bown who left the trust on 31 March 2014.

Debbie's appointment marked a return to Poole Hospital for her. She began her NHS management career at the hospital and enjoyed ten years as the trust’s general manager for medicine during the 1990s.

Monitor closed its investigation into Poole Hospital’s finances

Also in April, the health sector regulator Monitor announced that it was closing its investigation into the hospital's finances which began in June 2013.


Endoscopy unit reopens after major refurbishment

The newly refurbished endoscopy department was officially reopened in May and includes state-of-the-art technology, an improved environment and more efficient services following the completion of a £0.5m refurbishment.


Continence care MP Robert Syms recognises outstanding achievement

In June local MP Robert Syms visited Poole Hospital to learn more about an innovative approach to clinical care that earned the hospital’s physiotherapists national recognition at the 2014 National Continence Care Awards. Mr Syms said: "I was very impressed with the team working and the fact that the advances they made have been nationally recognised by awards. This is Poole Hospital at its best.”


Learning Festival at Poole Hospital is success

The hospital hosted its first learning festival event in July that showcased the learning and development opportunities on offer to Poole Hospital staff. The clinical skills suite was open for demonstrations and mini teaching sessions on injections, blood taking and cannulation, and the resuscitation team also led a simulation exercise in which visitors faced SimMan, an advanced simulation dummy able to talk and display symptoms to be diagnosed

Also in July, clinical research at the trust was celebrated when a new league table published by the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network showed that Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were spearheading a new trend for clinical research.


Dorset Epilepsy Service celebrates anniversary

The Dorset Epilepsy Service based at Poole Hospital celebrated its fifth anniversary in August and hosted a 'fun day' to raise awareness of epilepsy and fundraise for the service.


rogerInnovative nurse-led research trials

In September Poole Hospital was amongst the first in the country to undertake nurse-led clinical trials for patients with prostate cancer. The pioneering clinical trials are led by specialist trained research nurses who run their own clinics offering patient-focused treatments for prostate cancer that might not have been available to them during standard treatment.

dignity for dementiaDementia patients at Poole Hospital to benefit from £20,000 donation

Patients with dementia at Poole Hospital benefitted from a generous donation of £20,000 in September thanks to the fundraising efforts of three cyclists from Poole who travelled 500km across Costa Rica.

Practice development reaccreditation for hard working staff 

The hard work of staff in maintaining and improving standards of care was underlined in September when Poole Hospital received trust-wide practice development unit reaccreditation.

In October Poole Hospital celebrated the £4m refurbishment of our maternity and neonatal units. Local celebrity Debra Stephenson cut the ribbon to officially open the units. The work includes a complete refurbishment and relocation of the midwife-led birthing unit with new en-suite facilities, a new antenatal ward layout and a self-contained bereavement suite.

diabetesThe Diabetes Centre celebrates 20 years of service

20 years of The Diabetes Centre was also celebrated in October with a event to mark the milestone. Guests were given a tour of the centre showcasing equipment used over the past two decades, showing the incredible innovations in diabetes care as well as the progression of diabetes treatment at the Diabetes Centre.

The standard of cancer care at Poole Hospital was again rated amongst the best in the country in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey. The overall standard of care was rated ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ by 92% of patients in the 2014 survey, placing Poole Hospital in the top 20% of trusts in the country on this key indicator for the third consecutive year.

We were also recognised as one of the best in the country for its treatment of patients with broken hips

New breast screening equipment offers more detailed & accurate diagnosis

In October, a state-of-the-art digital mammography unit was installed at the Dorset Breast Screening Unit in Poole Hospital.

The new digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) with biopsy facility unit is an innovative development in mammography technology, with only ten currently accessible across the UK. The unit produces 3D images which improve accuracy in the diagnosis of breast cancer by allowing cancer specialists to pinpoint the location of a tumour with greater accuracy.


Innovative pilot to identify heart problems in people with diabetes

Poole Hospital took part in a pilot that aimed to identify heart problems in people with diabetes. People who developed a foot ulcer because of diabetes received an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check for problems with their heart due to the possible increased risk of heart problems and premature death. The pilot aims to identify these problems earlier and take action to manage them.


Strong performance in CQC assessment

Poole Hospital was once again placed in the highest banding of hospital trusts (band six) in the Care Quality Commission's (CQC) Intelligent Monitoring Report, released in December.

The CQC assesses trusts on a risk basis, with those in the top band, six, deemed the very lowest risk, and those in the lowest band, one, viewed as the highest risk.

Patients rate A&E department highly in survey

The hospital was also rated highly in the national Accident and Emergency Patient Survey which gives an indication of patients’ experience of accident and emergency (A&E) departments, and the quality of care they provide. The trust was amongst the best in the country for communicating with patients over test results and providing effective pain relief in a timely manner
