‘Invaluable contribution’ of volunteers celebrated

The contributions and efforts of Poole Hospital’s volunteers have been recognised at an annual volunteers’ dinner.

Guests included more than 150 volunteers, the Mayor of Poole, councillor Lindsay Wilson, Sheriff of Poole, councillor Sean Gabriel, Sheriff of Poole’s Lady, Deborah Jones, Poole Hospital chairman, Steve Erskine, and Poole Hospital chief executive, Debbie Fleming.

The event, at Lighthouse arts centre on 19 January, saw attendees socialise and share their experiences of volunteering at Poole Hospital.

The Trust has 275 volunteers aged between 16 and 93 years old that work across 43 different areas at the hospital. They donate a combined 21,000 hours of their time to the trust each year.

Steve Erskine said that the volunteers’ efforts are ‘appreciated by everyone at the hospital’.

“It was a pleasure to celebrate the efforts of our volunteers, which are appreciated by everyone at the hospital and have received very positive feedback from patients and their families,” said Steve.

“It was a privilege to welcome both the Mayor and the Sheriff of Poole and I would like to thank each and every one of our volunteers for their contributions that are vital to the smooth running of the hospital.”

Sarah Tinnion, the hospital’s volunteer of the year for 2017, said it was a ‘fantastic evening’.

"It was a fantastic evening and I was proud to be there with all the other volunteers,” said Sarah.

"I love helping out on the children's ward and I plan to devote even more of my time this year.

"Volunteering for the hospital is such a great experience and I'd really recommend it to anyone."

Joy Janati, voluntary services lead at Poole Hospital, said: “Volunteers provide the hospital with an invaluable contribution, supporting patients with an extra helping hand that staff don’t always have the time to offer.

“The event is one way of saying thank you.”
