Radio Solent goes behind the scenes at Poole Hospital

BBC Radio Solent’s breakfast show listeners learned more about the people behind hospital services in east Dorset in a special three-and-a-half hour programme on Wednesday (10 January).

Dorset breakfast show presenter Steve Harris was joined by reporters as they spent the morning broadcasting live from the Dolphin restaurant, while Julian Clegg, who presents the main Solent breakfast programme, went out live from the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The programme switched between interviews and insights from each hospital, which was also reflected on the radio station’s Twitter account and on the BBC Dorset website.

The programme featured a range of staff and volunteers, including:

  • head of chaplaincy, Declan McConville, who provided the thought for the day
  • Libby Beesley, emergency preparedness officer, on how the hospital tries to maintain good flow at times of high demand
  • Mark Mould, our chief operating officer, on how hospital’s respond to winter pressures
  • Debbie Fleming, chief executive, on the hospital’s bright future
  • 18-year-old volunteer David Bourne on what the benefits he’s experienced by giving his time to the hospital, and
  • Kevin Bailey, catering services manager, on how his team deliver thousands of patient and visitor meals each week.

Feedback on the broadcast has been incredibly positive, with our own and BBC Solent’s Tweets about the morning being liked and shared numerous times.

Debbie said the programme was a great opportunity for the public to hear from staff in a wide range of roles delivering services at the hospital.

“It was a very special morning which raised the morale of all who participated,” she said.

“Everyone who took part had fun, and very importantly, the voice of staff was clearly heard – that is, the voice of those who serve patients every day.

“Staff spoke not only about the pace and pressures associated with working in the NHS, but also of their fantastic teams, and the way we all work together for the benefit of our patients.

“The public responded accordingly, clearly thanking us for the care we provide, and reminding us of how very much our services are valued.”
