Haematology department recognised for myeloma care

The haematology department has been awarded accreditation for its care for patients with myeloma, a form of blood cancer that often affects several areas of the body, reflecting its position as one of the top centres in the country for this type of service.

A glass plaque was presented to the department by Myeloma UK – the only organisation in the UK that deals exclusively with this type of cancer – on 2 November.

The department received accreditation for the Myeloma UK Clinical Service Excellence Programme after it fulfilled certain criteria including the quality and breadth of treatments provided, patient accommodation and how patients are supported socially and psychologically.

The service includes both outpatients and inpatients who are treated by specialist nurses and doctors. The department is the 12th in the UK to receive this accreditation and a plaque will be placed in the outpatients area of the Dorset Cancer Centre at the hospital to recognise the achievement.

“The accreditation recognises the quality of the service we provide to our patients with myeloma and encourages us to strive for further improvements,” said Dr Rebecca Maddams, the hospital’s clinical lead for haematology.

“Being presented with this plaque is great for the morale of the team and recognition of all the hard work that has been done, and will continue to be done, to improve care for patients with myeloma.”

Suzanne Renwick, healthcare professional projects manager at Myeloma UK, said, “We found that Poole Hospital’s haematology department provides great care for patients with myeloma. We were especially impressed with the robust education programme, including regular haematology education days.

“The provision of counselling services plus the range and access to free complementary therapies are some of the best we’ve seen.

“It is a truly holistic approach that is so important in helping patients deal with everything that comes with a myeloma diagnosis.”
