Improve your health and save money by giving up alcohol for Dry January

One person every hour in the UK dies from health problems directly caused by alcohol and another three die from problems associated with regular alcohol intake.

Dry January is a popular annual one-month booze-free challenge where millions of people in the UK give up drinking.

Poole Hospital’s Alcohol Care & Treatment Service (ACTS) is supporting Dry January by encouraging people to stop drinking for a month or maybe longer as part of the initiative. You can sign up online here or via the Dry January app.

Alcohol misuse can lead to liver disease, several types of cancer and mental health problems. Giving up for just one month can help you lose weight, sleep better and have more energy as well as saving you a lot of cash.

Last year, 79 per cent of participants in Dry January saved money, 62 per cent had better sleep and more energy and 49 per cent lost weight. This could be you this year.

“Many people drink to excess, especially over the festive season,” said Dr Nick Sharer, clinical lead for alcohol related healthcare at the hospital.

“Committing yourself to a dry January will help your body start to recover if you have over indulged, although you will not reverse all the ill-effects.

“You never know, you might experience so much benefit that you remain teetotal.”

As well as making a difference to yourself, you can raise money for the hospital by being sponsored by Poole Hospital Charity.

All the money you raise will go to the ACTS trust fund which provides specialist addiction training to improve the quality of the service to patients and their carers and to fund specialist clinical equipment.
