Children no longer permitted to attend antenatal scans

Children under the age of 16 will not be allowed to attend antenatal scans at the hospital from 1 October.

Antenatal scans are important clinical examinations and sonographers need to be able to concentrate on what they are looking at with as few distractions as possible. The ultrasound department has taken the decision to ensure patients have a safe pregnancy and a safe delivery.

The health of an unborn baby is the department’s top priority.  While there is often lots of excitement surrounding a pregnancy, and prospective parents might like to their family members to be involved, it is very important that the health of the developing baby and the expectant mother come first.

Recognising any potential abnormalities is a crucial element of the scan and the sonographer has to think carefully about how to pass on the news that there may be something that requires further investigation.

Please ensure that appropriate child care is arranged on the day of your scan.  If patients need to change an appointment contact obstetric ultrasound on 01202 442704. For more information visit the ultrasound section of the website here.
