Face the fire and help raise money for Poole Hospital

A firewalk is being held to raise funds for Poole Hospital and members of the public are invited to see if they can handle the heat.

The firewalk is a six-metre long barefoot walk over hot embers that can reach highs of almost 650 degrees Celsius.

All the funds that are raised by participants attempting to cross it will go direct to Poole Hospital Charity and be spent on provisions and equipment above that provided by the NHS to enhance patient care across the hospital.

Registration is £15 with a minimum sponsorship of £30. Every entrant can choose which area of the hospital to raise money for and teams from the hospital’s maternity department and dementia care have already signed up to take part and improve their areas.

The event is hosted by professional firewalk company Planit Firewalking and participants will first complete an hour of self-development training to enable them to walk over the fire safely and with confidence.

Friends and family are welcome to show their support and enjoy the evening for a small donation on the door.

It will take place at the Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton on 30 August, which coincides with the first day of the Bournemouth Air Festival and included within the registration price is access to an exclusive viewing area for the night time show. There will be refreshments at the event along with a bar and other stands.

“We’re really excited about this event,” said Sophie Lawson, Poole Hospital Charity events and challenges fundraising coordinator.

“You don’t have to be an athlete to take part. It’s an empowering, feel-good and fun experience that will raise vital funds for your local hospital.”

Jillian Ireland, a midwife at the hospital, will be one of the ‘firewalkers’ on the day. “I signed up straight away as I like a challenge – especially one that helps raise money for the hospital,” said Jillian.

“I want to help the maternity unit to continue to provide an excellent service with safe and high-quality care for our patients and fundraising events like the firewalk are the perfect way to do this.

“It’s going to be such a fun evening out and I’d encourage everyone to join me and help raise funds for Poole Hospital.”

Spaces are limited so if you’re interested in taking on the challenge, register today at or visit the Poole Hospital Charity Facebook page.
