Inspirational staff and supporters recognised at annual awards evening

Doctors, healthcare assistants, volunteers and fundraisers were among staff and supporters honoured at this year’s Poole Hospital Awards.

More than 200 nominations were received from staff, patients and the public, in categories recognising innovation, excellence in care, volunteering and fundraising.

At an awards evening on Monday (24 April), the final placings were revealed, with AFC Bournemouth chairman, Jeff Mostyn guest of honour. Jeff (pictured with his wife Rose, Trust chairman Angela Schofield and chief executive Debbie Fleming) also presented the living our values award to the hospital’s outpatients helpdesk team, recognised in their nomination as the “beating heart” of the hospital.

Dr Saskie Dorman, consultant in palliative care, was named employee of the year. Receiving her award from chief executive Debbie Fleming, the audience heard extracts from her nomination, made by a colleague. Saskie is pictured with Debbie and event compere, Mr Robert Talbot, medical director.

“Saskie consistently strives to improve standards and enhance patient care,” it read.

“She is an outstanding role model and highly supportive of the whole team, taking time to get to know each member of staff, including non-clinical staff and volunteers.”

Occupational therapist Ruth Martin was named the excellence in patient care individual award winner. Ruth’s special interest is in patients with dementia or cognitive impairment.

“Ruth always takes the time to ensure that every patient is treated as an individual and their needs understood,” her citation read. “She is passionate about the role that occupational therapy plays in a patient’s care.”

And Colin and Tanya Appleby were named fundraisers of the year. The couple were inspired to raise funds to develop a teenage and young adult unit in the Dorset Cancer Centre, at Poole Hospital, following the death of their son Vincent just over a year ago. Raising more than £35,000 in just 11 months, with their citation noting the couple had “inspired hundreds if not thousands of people to help the hospital.”

Angela Schofield, chairman, thanked the staff, supporters, patients, relatives and members of the public who had taken the time to make a nomination, and to local engineering firm Meggitt, which has supported the awards for the past 20 years.

Angela said: “It was a brilliant evening, providing a welcome opportunity to recognise those who go the extra mile and deliver a service above and beyond expectations.

“The awards truly are a great way to say thank you to everyone who helps make Poole Hospital successful.”

Addressing attendees, Jeff Mostyn said both organisations exist to serve their communities.

“Poole Hospital has an excellent reputation here, and further afield, for the care you provide,” he said. “You also have an equally enviable reputation for the way in which this care is provided.”
