National award for flu campaign

Poole Hospital has won a prestigious national award for its efforts to promote the flu vaccination to staff.

The hospital’s flu fighter team picked up the award for the most improved flu fighter campaign at the NHS Employers Flu Fighter Awards on Monday (20 March).  The concerted winter 2016/17 campaign led to an increase in flu vaccine uptake by frontline staff from 31.1 per cent to 80.7 per cent - statistically, the most improved trust nationally.

NHS Flu Fighters Award 2016-17The hospital’s flu fighter team, which included representatives from occupational health, human resources and communications, ran a successful campaign to encourage staff to be vaccinated. Judges commented on the fact that the team took a ‘lead by example’ approach, and gained support and engagement at senior board level, including from clinical and executive directors. The campaign also helped dispel myths about the flu jab with a fun ‘Guess Flu?’ online quiz, which more than 500 staff took part in.

Debbie Fleming, chief executive, said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this prestigious national award.

"It was important for us to bring a sense of fun to the campaign which helped us to better raise awareness and educate our staff about their role in protecting our patients and each other against the dangers of flu."

Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, which runs the national flu fighter campaign, said: “This is very inspiring local work by staff who go the extra mile to keep their colleagues and patients safe.

“When this flu fighter campaign started in 2011 only a third of frontline NHS staff in England were having these vaccinations and now it is almost two-thirds.

“That is a huge improvement over a relatively short time in the life of the NHS, so really all these flu campaigners are winners.”

The hospital’s award was presented by Joanne Yarwood, national immunisation programme manager, Public Health England (PHE) and was collected by Jon Harding (head of organisational development and education) and Richard Moremon (head of communications).

The national awards celebrate the success of flu teams across England and Wales and were held on Monday 27 March in Leeds.
