Consultant develops new resource for dads of babies on neonatal units

A Poole Hospital consultant has developed a new information pack specifically for fathers of babies admitted to neonatal units.

DadPad Neonatal was conceived by Professor Minesh Khashu, consultant neonatologist, and complements the existing DadPad guide for new dads. It’s thought to be the first resource of its kind aimed at fathers of babies on neonatal units.

The pack of laminated cards contain practical information including what dads can do to support themselves and mum, the range of feelings and emotions they may experience and how to find support, as well as more practical advice on holding and handling a premature baby. It’s hoped the tool will significantly improve a dad’s understanding of their baby’s care and treatment and will also help in conversations with healthcare professionals on a range of topics. minesh khashu

Dads of babies at the neonatal unit at Poole Hospital will be the first in the country to benefit from the resource, developed with the makers of the original DadPad, Inspire Cornwall Community Interest Company.

“DadPad is such a good idea for new dads, bringing together a range of information in a handy and convenient pack,” said Prof Khashu.

“I was excited about the potential opportunities for neonatal units and keen to develop a specialised version for this purpose.

“Having a sick or preterm baby is a very stressful time for parents. It can get even more stressful for dads who may have to go back to work quite quickly and may not be able to spend as much time on the neonatal unit as they would wish to.”

“I think the new pack will be a huge asset for all parents and staff, and especially for dads.

“I hope that other neonatal units will adopt it and benefit from the support it offers.”

DadPad Neonatal will be available at Poole Hospital early next year, initially free thanks to charitable funding.
