Poole Hospital Awards 2016

Poole Hospital’s annual awards recognised staff and volunteers that go above and beyond to make the hospital a better place for patients and staff.

Over 200 nominations were received from staff, patients and patients’ families who wanted to recognise the great lengths individuals and teams go to ensuring that patients receive good care. Ten awards were presented this year with winners in a wide range of roles including receptionists, matrons and doctors as well as a local taxi driver.

One winner was Karen Fernley, child health’s acting matron, who was named employee of the year. Karen was nominated by her colleagues for her exceptional contribution to the unit where she works long hours ensuring sick children receive great care and the staff that care for them have the support they need. Her colleagues described Karen as ‘the glue that holds the unit together and worth her weight in gold’.

Speaking about her nomination and award Karen said: “I’m surprised but delighted to have received this award. I take pride in ensuring the care we provide is safe and respectful, centred around the children we look after.”

She went on to say: “I believe a leader is only as good as their team and I couldn’t do my job without an incredible team behind me, together we provide an exceptional service to children, their families and their carers. This can be a tough job so it’s lovely to be recognised by my colleagues for the work I do.”

Angela Schofield, Poole Hospital chairman, gave her thanks to the staff, supporters, patients, relatives and members of the public who had taken the time to make a nomination, and to local engineering firm Meggitt, which has supported the awards for the past 20 years.

She said: “'It was a brilliant evening, and thank you to all who nominated and supported the Poole Hospital Awards this year.”

The awards were held at the Haven Hotel, Sandbanks, and were presented by governors, board members and the event’s corporate sponsor; Meggitt with her worshipful Mayor of Poole; Councillor Ann Stribley and her Mayoress; Jo Lewington attending as the guests of honour. The evening commenced with a special video message from Robert Braithwaite CBE, DL of Sunseeker International and was compered by Fraser Smith, from the chaplains team.
