Could you be a hospital governor?

Poole Hospital is holding an event for prospective governors on 4 August from 11.30am–12.30pm.

The session is open to foundation trust members and the public, and is a chance to hear more about the role from Debbie Fleming, chief executive, and Angela Schofield, chairman.

Anyone interested in attending or finding out more should ring 01202 448723.

Why stand as a governor? Here's what two of our current governors have to say.

Richard Negus, public governor"I decided to put myself up for election as a governor as a way of trying to repay the enormous debt we owe Poole Hospital for the amazing care my daughter receives every time she is admitted.

"I had no idea how complex an organisation the hospital is and it is a great privilege to work with ALL staff in trying to make it an even better place.

"There is a great responsibility in ensuring good governance carries on and working with colleagues to promote Poole Hospital as a centre of excellence by providing feedback into and out of the hospital.

"As someone who cares about the hospital it is satisfying to feel that I am making a contribution, albeit in a very small way!'

- Richard Negus

Sarah Holmes, public governor"One busy April day encapsulated many aspects of the role of governor for me: I started the day talking with junior doctors who were striking about the proposed new contract.

"As a public governor I represent the interests of the public as well as members. Communication with both staff and patients is a key part of the role.  I observed the Trust board meeting. The papers published before the meetings illustrate the complexities of ensuring that the hospital is well led and that patient safety and care is paramount.  Being a governor is certainly a commitment, but really worthwhile.

"In the evening I had the honour of attended the staff awards, a celebration when the winners were announced. It is the people who make Poole Hospital so special, and I am proud to be a part of it as we strive for excellence."

- Sarah Holmes
