Cancer care among the best

Patients treated at Poole Hospital’s Dorset Cancer Centre rate their care as better than average, a new national survey has found.

The latest National Cancer Patient Experience Survey results, shows services ranked as one of the leading centres in the country.

More than 770 patients completed this year’s National Cancer Experience survey, scoring Poole Hospital’s cancer services 8.9 out of a maximum 10 for their overall care. The national average is 8.7.

Patients ranked the hospital highly in a range of other key areas including:

  • being involved as much as they wanted to be in decisions about their care
  • getting support through their treatment
  • treated with dignity and respect
  • ease of contact with their Clinical Nurse Specialist

radiotherapyThe results of the survey also identified areas where improvements might be made, including explanations of treatment side effects, availability of information and details of cancer research projects. These findings will be carefully reviewed to ensure all necessary steps are taken to address any concerns.

Dr Tamas Hickish, clinical director for cancer care at Poole Hospital, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our latest results, and extremely proud that our patients again rated the overall standard of cancer care so highly in the latest national patient survey.

“The cancer team is committed to ensuring the highest standards of care for patients in the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole, and are delighted to see that the hard work and dedication of our staff has been recognised in this survey.

“In particular, it was extremely pleasing to see that so many patients felt that they were definitely involved as much as they wanted to be in decisions about their care and treatment.

“We remain committed to improving our service further, and will be looking closely at the areas where patients have rated us less highly to ensure we put in place any necessary improvements as soon as possible.”

The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey is conducted by Quality Health. 774 Poole Hospital patients took the opportunity to respond to the survey, which was sent to all adult patients (aged 16 and over) with a primary diagnosis of cancer who were admitted and discharged between April, May and June 2015. The results were published on 5 July 2016.
