Positive childcare at Poole Hospital

Children attending Poole Hospital are more likely to have their treatment explained to them than at most other hospitals, according to a Care Quality Commission survey published last week.

And Poole is also better than most hospitals in ensuring parents know who to contact if they have concerns after discharge and giving parents and carers written information about their child's condition or treatment to take home.

The results of the national survey compare all types of hospital, both local hospitals with a children’s unit and specialist children hospitals together highlighting those that are better, not so good or about the same as one another.

Child health care matron Sian Jenkins said: “It is really important that children and parents understand what is going to happen when they come into hospital so they avoid surprises which can cause anxiety and distress. They also need to feel supported after discharge with the necessary information to look after their child and contact details if there are any difficulties. We are really pleased that the efforts we make to do this are recognised in the survey.

“While delighted the results generally show that children and young people coming into Poole hospital receive good care, our aim is to build on the excellent practice that already exists and focus on improving those areas where we are rated “about the same” as other hospitals.

Some 58 patients aged 8 -15 and over 100 parents who were treated at Poole responded to the national survey and overall Poole scored in line with other hospitals across the country in most categories and were not in the bottom category for any aspects of the survey.
