Completed refurbishment of women’s health unit supports patient centred care

The refurbishment of Poole Hospital's Harbourside Gynaecology Unit has now been completed with the opening of a new conservatory waiting area that offers women spectacular views across Poole Harbour.

The Harbourside Gynaecology Unit opened in 2011, and has been providing a one-stop single visit specialist service for women for a number of years. It provides a modern dedicated women's health outpatient facility that has already seen over 15,000 patients since it opened.

The centre offers high quality, state of the art outpatient care in a bright, modern and spacious environment dedicated to gynaecological outpatient services for the women of Poole and the surrounding area, complete with breath-taking harbour views.

As well as providing specialist outpatient facilities for a variety of women's health problems, it offers state-of-the-art "see and treat" clinics which reduce the number of visits to hospital and also provides emergency clinics for women experiencing problems in early pregnancy and other gynaecological emergencies.

It brings together a range of specialist roles including gynaecology consultants, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialists and early pregnancy nurse counsellor to provide a genuine one-stop facility, offering diagnostics and treatment for many conditions in the same visit.

Lead consultant gynaecologist Mr Tim Hillard said: "Attending a hospital can be a stressful time for anyone, but the new conservatory together with our caring and friendly staff and outstanding facilities create a positive, welcoming atmosphere - women know as soon as they walk through our doors that we are fully dedicated to providing the latest high quality, friendly and professional care."

Debbie Fleming, chief executive who recently visited the unit said: “This unit - in common with other services throughout the hospital – is a great example of “the Poole Approach” in action – that is, a service that has been designed specifically around the needs of patients, allowing them speedy access to friendly, professional, compassionate care.

“The Harbourside Unit and its hardworking staff provide our patients with a positive atmosphere in which the wellbeing of women is paramount; the conservatory is finishing touch and a fantastic addition to the unit.”
