Top tips from our skin experts on how to stay safe in sun

Our dermatologists reveal their top tips for staying safe in the sun this summer.

  • Slip on a shirt – covering up is the best form of protection.
  • Wear good quality clothing that doesn’t let the light in. If you want to test your clothes hold them up to a light – if you can see straight through them they will not protect you against the sun. Look for clothing with sun protection factor (SPF).
  • Wear a hat that covers your face, ears and neck and wear a pair of UV protective sunglasses
  • Seek out the shade – between 11am-3pm when it is sunny. Step out of the sun before your skin has the chance to redden or burn.
  • Keep babies and very young children out of direct sunlight
  • Slap on the sunscreen – when choosing a sunscreen look for: high protection SPF to protect against UVB – nothing less than factor 30 and the UVA circle logo and/or four or five UVA starssuncream
  • Apply suncream 30 minutes before going out in the sun and re-apply every two hours and straight after swimming and towel drying
  • Remember no sunscreen will provide 100% protection

You can find out more about staying safe in the sun this summer at our sun awareness event at Sandbanks beach on 27 August, 10-3pm. There will also be an opportunity to have your moles and skin checked. Find out more by clicking here.
