New service wins award

afterglow awardThe radiography team at Poole Hospital has been selected as winner of a Radiography Team of the Year Award.

The award from the Society and College of Radiographers has been given for the radiography team’s development of Afterglow, a support group for patients who have recently finished their radiotherapy treatment.

Afterglow aims to bridge the gap between the end of treatment and follow up and gives patients a chance to meet others who have had similar experiences.

The group has been set up with the intention of tackling long term issues of cancer treatment including physical, psychological or spiritual needs.

Katharine Spinks, part of the team that won the award said: “We feel very honoured to have been given this award, and extremely grateful to our department who has supported us 100%.

“There is often a gap between patients finishing radiotherapy and seeing the consultant, and research shows that patients often feel alone and isolated during this time. With an increased focus on survivorship, we felt that we could help these patients, and therefore we set up the Afterglow support group.”

The awards recognise the hard work and dedication of radiography teams across the country and will be presented in November.

The next support meeting will take place on 12 October, contact 01202 448174 for more information.
