New service offers more choice for cancer patients

Patient David Forster with Nicky HaggerThe Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital has launched a new service offering chemotherapy patients the choice to have their treatment closer to their homes.

The new service is provided by specialist chemotherapy trained nurses from the Dorset Cancer Centre who will run the clinics every Friday from Wareham Hospital, part of Dorset HealthCare.

The Dorset Cancer Centre provides medical and clinical oncology services for the whole of Dorset and this service is being bought to Wareham Hospital to alleviate some of the long distances some in Dorset make to attend their appointments.

Andrea Moxham, matron for cancer services said: “We understand that having chemotherapy is a challenging time for our patients and that travelling long distances to receive treatment can be exhausting

“This new service will give our patients the choice to have their treatment closer to their homes whilst still under the care of our skilled specialist nurses.”

Donna Kiss, matron at Swanage and Wareham Community Hospitals, said: “We are delighted to provide this new Wareham-based service for the local community.

“Ensuring that we provide efficient and high quality health care facilities for those receiving treatment is our top priority. The opening of this clinic works towards our goal of better serving Dorset residents so they have less time to wait and less distance to travel for treatment.”

David Forster, a patient coming to Wareham Hospital to have treatment as part of the new service said: “Living in Swanage this new service has been a godsend saving me the inconvenience of driving to Poole for my regular treatment sessions.

“Everyone from the Dorset Cancer Centre has been so welcoming and it’s a real joy to now be treated closer to home.”

Fellow patient Richard Dowden explains the importance of the new service to him: “With winter coming this new initiative will be really helpful to me.

“Treatment sessions can be long and the room’s beautiful aspect looking out over lovely gardens helps to pass the time.

“I’ve previously received treatment overseas and I can say that the care I receive from Poole Hospital is superb, just as good if not better than any other.”

Those interested in having their treatment at Wareham Hospital should speak to their consultant or chemotherapy nurse.
