Diabetes report shows county is high risk

Residents in Dorset have one of the highest chances of developing type 2 diabetes in the country, a major study published today has shown.

Dr MasdingBut Dr Mike Masding (right), a consultant physician who specialises in diabetes at Poole Hospital, says there are some simple steps that many of those at risk can take to reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.

Public Health England's report provides the most accurate estimate to date of how many people over 16 in England have blood sugar levels in a range indicating a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The study, commissioned by the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme ( NHS DPP ), found that 13.4 per cent of people in Dorset were at risk - only people in Harrow had a greater risk at 14 per cent.

In Brighton and Hove - the population at least risk - the figure was just 8.5 per cent.

Dr Masding said the high figure for Dorset reflects an ageing population and an increase in obesity in the county.

“The two major risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes are being overweight and then also old age," he said.

"We see this rise as being due to a combination of both our elderly population and increasing levels of obesity.

“For people who are overweight, there are some very straightforward steps that anyone can take to significantly reduce this risk.

“The most important thing is to maintain a healthy lifestyle – this means eating a balanced diet that’s low in sugars and fat, staying active regularly and if you drink alcohol, only doing so in moderation.

“The symptoms of type 2 diabetes include feeling very thirsty, going to the toilet more often than usual, tiredness and weight loss - if you’re concerned contact your GP as soon as possible.”
