Grateful patient donates £500 in thanks of care

snookPatients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are set to benefit from a generous donation of £500 to the gastroenterology department.

Melanie Nicola, a patient with Crohn’s disease, wanted to thank the team at Poole Hospital for the care she has received from consultant gastroenterologist Dr Jonathon Snook, nurse specialist Sue Surgenor and the rest of the team.

Melanie and partner Carl raised the money with the help of Sunseeker, the company Carl works for, who periodically donate money to worthwhile causes by selling surplus wood from the building of yachts.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a relapsing and remitting disease causing a number of symptoms including, abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhoea sometimes with blood and mucus, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Many conditions can cause inflammation of the bowel, the two most common causes are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Melanie said: “I wanted the donation to go to Dr Snook for his research as I have had this awful illness for coming up to eighteen years and have always been so well looked after by Dr Snook, Sue and their amazing team.

“These people really do something wonderful for all with inflammatory bowel disease, it really makes all the difference and I feel comfortable with the team.”

The money raised will be put towards the purchase of a laptop and iPad to be used as an education tool with patients during consultation in the IBD clinic.

Sue said: “We were extremely grateful to receive a cheque for £500 for the gastroenterology department and for the thoughtfulness, generosity and support of Melanie, her partner Carl and Sunseeker.”

Dr Snook and Sue were invited to on board a yacht for an official presentation of the cheque by Melanie’s partner Carl and Ross Tree who also works for Sunseeker.
