Poole Hospital doctor reminds local people about the importance of signing up to the organ donor register

transplant weekTo mark the start of this year's National Transplant Week (7-13 July) Poole Hospital is showing the public how important it is to sign up to the organ donor register.

Figures from the NHS Blood and Transplant service show 96% of people would accept an organ if they needed one but only about 65% would give an organ, which is why creating awareness of the importance of organ donation is so important.

Dr Spike Briggs, consultant in intensive care medicine at Poole Hospital said:

“Any death is very sad, but organ donation is one way of retrieving perhaps something positive from a sorrowful situation.

“Since organ transplantation became a possibility in the 1960s, organ donation has remained quite the exception when people sadly die, but we would like to see a future where consideration for organ donation becomes a normal part of most end-of-life circumstances.

“The reward for this is saving countless lives of people who are waiting for a vital organ transplant. At the moment in Britain, three people die every day for want of an organ transplant.”

“Poole Hospital is above average nationally for organ donations and last year, organs from the hospital were transplanted in to 16 recipients, effectively saving their lives.”

During the week the hospital will be hosting an information stand in the Dome entrance to the hospital. The stand will have details on how to sign up to the organ donor register and the opportunity to speak to specialist nurses and health professionals about organ donation and transplantation.

There will also be a stand at Bikers Night on Poole Quay on Tuesday 8 July for a chance to sign-up to the organ donor register, and also discuss organ donation and transplantation.

A celebrative memorial for all those who donated organs to patients at Poole Hospital has been also been commissioned for the autumn and is being designed by children from a local school.

It is hoped the stands and the commemorative memorial will help spread the word about organ donation and the importance of passing the message on, as National Transplant Week approaches. Please visit http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ for further information on organ donation.
