Local man raises over £5,000 for the Dorset Cancer Centre

Local grandfather Brian Higgs has raised over £5,000 for the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital to say thank you for the “tremendous” care he received whilst being treated for prostate cancer.

After the success of a fundraising evening last year that raised £3,000, Brian Higgs and his band Shadow Sounds performed to another sell out event this year that added a further £2,000 to the total.

The 60’s themed musical charity fundraiser took place at the beginning of November and saw the band perform hits from the 60’s, inspired by Brian’s love of shadow music, a raffle, an auction and a special duet between Brian and his seven-year-old granddaughter Evie who also sang a song from the movie Frozen.

“Being told I had prostate cancer was a shock like I have never had before. You don’t appreciate it until you have been through it.

“Your whole life becomes refocused and you live for every day and enjoy everything.

“The staff here who have been involved in my treatment are tremendous, the oncology team are always there for me.

“After getting over the initial shock I thought I have to bring a positive out of this and decided I was going to do a fundraising event to raise money for the people coming after me and for good machines, so I got the band together.”

The money raised will help fund new equipment in the Dorset Cancer Centre which provides medical and clinical oncology services for the whole of Dorset, serving a total population of over 750,000.

The band, made up of Brian and his friends Glyn, Darren, Ian, Chris and another Brian are looking to organise another event next year.

Roger Wheelwright, senior research nurse for oncology said: “It is great to receive positive feedback from patients about their experience and care.

“Brian’s decision to organise these events and raising a total of over £5,000 in just over 12 months is a fantastic achievement and we thank him and his band for their support.

“The funds raised will help go towards supporting the high standard of treatment and care that Poole Hospital provides to all patients in Dorset”
