Dorset Epilepsy Service celebrates fifth anniversary

On Tuesday 19 August 2014 from 10:30am to 5pm, at the Thistle Hotel Poole Quay, the Dorset Epilepsy Service (DES) will be hosting a fun day.

The DES Fun day is a free drop in even open to all people with epilepsy in Dorset, their friends, family and carers to celebrate their fifth anniversary.

Poole Hospital Charity will also be there on the day to launch a fundraising drive to:

  • Develop ambulatory and video electroencephalograph (EEG) recording to incorporate more tests being carried out at home
  • Expand existing specialist neuropsychology support and counselling for people with epilepsy to meet demand
  • Purchase software for the MRI scanner for more detailed and meaningful imaging.

Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in the world with an estimated 7,500 in Dorset and approximately 600,000 people having epilepsy worldwide. The DES, based at Poole Hospital, provides services for people with epilepsy over the age of sixteen and who have left full-time education. Care is provided by a team of expert staff led by consultant neurologist Dr Rupert Page and two epilepsy specialist nurses Michelle Knight and Karen Symon.

Michelle Knight said: "Our aim is to provide support and education for people in Dorset who have epilepsy. There are approximately 1,000 people in the UK that die every year due to epilepsy related causes and it is thought that 400 of those deaths per year are avoidable.”

Karen Symon adds: “Approximately five per cent of people will have an isolated seizure in their lifetime. We work closely with general practitioners and community based teams to ensure adequate support for the long term care for people with epilepsy”.

To join in the fundraising drive and help support epilepsy services throughout Dorset please contact the fundraising team at Poole Hospital Charity on 01202 448449.
