Patients rate cancer care amongst best in the country

radiographerThe standard of cancer care at Poole Hospital has again been rated amongst the best in the country in the latest National Cancer Patient Experience Survey.

The overall standard of care at Poole Hospital was rated ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ by 92% of patients in the 2014 survey, placing Poole Hospital in the top 20% of trusts in the country on this key indicator for the third consecutive year.

Patients ranked the hospital highly in a range of other key areas including:

  • Getting understandable answers to important questions
  • Patients taking part in cancer research
  • Confidence and trust in all ward nurses
  • Control of pain

The results of the survey also identified areas where improvements might be made, including explanations of treatment side effects, availability of written information and privacy when receiving treatment. These findings will be carefully reviewed to ensure all necessary steps are taken to address any concerns.

Dr Tamas Hickish, clinical director for cancer care at Poole Hospital, said: “We are extremely pleased that our patients again rated the overall standard of cancer care so highly in the latest national patient survey.

“The Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital provides care to people from across the county, and we aim to provide every one of those patients with the best possible experience as they go through their cancer journey.

“We are also committed to improving our service further, and will be looking closely at the areas where patients have rated us less highly to ensure we put in place any necessary improvements as soon as possible.”

The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey is conducted by Quality Health. Over 520 Poole Hospital patients took the opportunity to respond to the survey, which was sent to all adult patients (aged 16 and over) with a primary diagnosis of cancer who were admitted and discharged between 1 September and 30 November 2013. The results were published on 25 September 2014.

cancer careJosephine O’Farrell, a patient who spent time on the cancer care ward said: “I spent time on Durlston ward last year, the staff were fantastic – I couldn’t fault anyone of them on their care at all.

“I always found the staff to be willing to explain in ways I can understand and they were always able to explain why I needed the treatment and how it would be done. The staff care is excellent and the clinical care is excellent too.”
