Young patients set off on trip of a lifetime

Peter Pan Dreamflight Poole Hospital groupLocal sick and disabled children will be setting off on a trip of a life time to Orlando, Florida on Saturday 13 October thanks to the charity Dreamflight.

Dreamflight changes young lives through taking seriously ill and disabled children, without their parents, on a holiday. Each year, 192 deserving children from all of the UK, accompanied by a team of medical carers, board a charted Boeing 747 and head to Florida for 10 days of fun and excitement. This year, five young patients from Poole Hospital will benefit from the trip.

Poole Hospital’s matron for children’s services, Sian Jenkins, who has been volunteering for the charity for the past eight years, said:

“The aim is to give families respite from caring and to give the children going the opportunity to become independent, make decisions for themselves and to be inspired with confidence. All the children are so excited - they’ve been counting down the sleeps until it’s time to go.”

The Dreamflight Peter Pan group, made up of volunteer nurses, a doctor, a physiotherapist and non medical escorts, carry out fundraising activities to fund the trip. This year, five volunteers from Poole Hospital are using their annual leave to accompany and support the children.

Sian Jenkins will be leading the Peter Pan group. She will be joined by consultant paediatrician Dr Sumit Bokhandi, staff nurse Alison Green, paediatric advanced nurse practitioner Gaynor Shakesheff and staff nurse Nicky Southwell.

The charity relies on fundraising to pay items including food, accommodation, equipment and travel. It has two salaried employees, with the remainder of the trip organisation being carried out by volunteers who give up their time to make a difference to children.

The trip has taken place every year for the past 26 years.
