50th anniversary celebrations

This year marks exactly 50 years since Her Majesty The Queen officially opened the new Poole Hospital on 11 July 1969.

To celebrate this milestone, a range of events and activities have been planned.

Firstly, on 11 July, the anniversary date itself, cakes bearing a reproduction of the original commemorative brochure were provided to all wards and departments, while a BBQ was held outside the Dolphin restaurant from 12pm with all proceeds going to Poole Hospital Charity.

Chairman David Moss and chief executive Debbie Fleming also planted a tree outside the restaurant at midday with a plaque to mark the occasion.

Elsewhere a garden next to Durlston ward was officially re-opened by chief executive Debbie Fleming following the removal of a temporary walkway put in place while the hospital’s new main entrance was constructed. Debbie thanked staff and volunteers there, and at the adjacent Sandbanks ward, for their support and patience during the works.

This was in place for several months as part of our temporary diversions supporting the new main entrance development. Importantly, the restoration of this garden will enable works to progress on the agreed oncology outpatients development.

Later, and over the three days from 12-14 September, our ‘golden jubilee’ celebrations will continue as we officially open our new main entrance joined by some very special guests of honour, hold our annual members meeting, say thank you to all of our staff, volunteers and fundraisers and open our hospital doors to the public on the morning of 14 September.
