About us

Poole HospitalPoole Hospital is an acute general hospital based on the south coast of England. The trust has an income of around £260 million each year, and employs around 3,700 staff.

The hospital has a 24-hour major accident and emergency department and is the designated trauma unit for east Dorset, serving a population of around 500,000 people. 

In addition, the hospital’s flagship Dorset Cancer Centre provides medical and clinical oncology services for the whole of Dorset, serving a total population of over 750,000.

We are proud of the good reputation Poole Hospital enjoys within the local community, both as a provider of first-class health care services and as a major employer.

Both St Mary’s Maternity Hospital and Forest Holme, the palliative care unit, are located a short walk from the main hospital.

We consistently feature within the top twenty per cent in both national patient and staff satisfaction surveys.


During 2018/19 we:

  • treated 91,087 patients in our emergency and minor injuries department
  • delivered 4,119 babies
  • dealt with 202,673 requests for medical imaging  managed 30,577 radiotherapy attendances
  • cared for 225,322 new and follow-up outpatients 
  • saw 3,662 elective inpatients, 39,044 non-elective inpatients 
  • cared for 34,682 day patients 
  • served 476,079 patient meals 
  • made 39,700 patient transfers to diagnostic areas
