Restorative dentistry and oral rehabilitation

Mr Simon GS Ellis, the consultant in restorative dentistry is a core member of the oncology multi-disciplinary team and sees patients before treatment to assess and establish a pathway of dental care needs. Primarily, this aimed at preventing and minimising the oral side effect of radiotherapy or the prosthetic rehabilitation following tumour resection.

Prosthetic replacement of the teeth and oral structures can be achieved with dentures, obturators, bridges and implants. Teeth are not always replaced depending on the nature and extent of side effects of treatment and the difficulties that can pose on long-term dental maintenance.

As a result dental management is more complex than encountered in primary care but patients should still have and attend their own dentist for ongoing check-ups and routine care. Close communication is maintained to keep the dentist informed of the patient’s progress and to ensure arrangements are in place for when care is completed in the department. However, given the complexity of care long-term periodic follow-up may be required especially if dental implants are used.
