Pre-planning radiotherapy superintendent

The clinical radiographers will pre-plan, plan and prepare patients for radiotherapy.

This includes advising the patients about the radiotherapy treatment process, making the radiotherapy mask to aid correct and optimal positioning of the patient in the radiotherapy machine in order to consistently delivery the x-ray beams, arrange and co-ordinate CT scans to assess the density of the soft tissues, bone and teeth in the radiotherapy field to help calculate the radiotherapy dose and undertake the radiotherapy treatment.

The superintendent who leads the team attends the MDT to ensure patients are seen as soon as possible once the decision for radiotherapy treatment has been made and works in close contact with the restorative dentistry consultant as any dental extractions can have a significant effect on tissue density and the required radiotherapy dose.

The superintendent can also clarify the radiotherapy fields of patients who have received radiotherapy in the past if post radiotherapy dental extractions are needed or implants are required for dental rehabilitation.
