Maxillofacial prosthetics service

Maxillofacial prosthetics service

Working as part of the specialist head and neck multi-disciplinary team, the maxillofacial prosthetist, (reconstructive scientist) provides clinical, scientific and advisory services for patients to aid their rehabilitation using implants, splints, 3D computer software/printing and prostheses.

Involvement from the specialty may be required pre-operatively in the planning for ablative surgery and during resection/reconstruction procedures, providing assistance for implant positioning or surgical obturation techniques.

Post-operatively the specialty will undertake treatment pathways for prosthetic and medical device rehabilitation.

The use of prostheses and medical devices returns an element of function and restores cosmetic appearance. It also allows the patient to regain their body image, helping both psychologically and socially. The maxillofacial prosthetist will spend lengthy periods of time with patients and the relationship can endure for many years, fitting them with new devices when renovation or replacement is required.
