Dental hygienist

The hygienist provides detailed dental health advice, oral and denture hygiene instruction along with scaling and polishing so patients can clean and maintain their teeth to a very high standard.

 

Preventive advice is crucial and our Hygienist is familiar with the challenges and specific needs of oncology patients especially those with radiation induced dry mouths. 

 

Products usually advised for patients starting radiotherapy:

- Fluoride mouthwash 0.05% NaF [ideally alcohol free].  3 options:   Colgate FluoriGard 400mL,  Endekay 500ml   OR   Sodium fluoride Sugar Free.  Rinse teeth for 1 minute at bedtime before spitting out.   Dilute with water if stinging occurs.

- Biotene Dry Mouth moisturising mouthwash (500mL) OR: Bioxtra alcohol-free mouthrinse with fluoride (250ml).     Rinse mouth for 30 seconds before spitting out.

- Difflam Oral rinse (300mL)  OR: Benzydamine Hydrochloride 0.15% w/v mouthwash Sugar Free (300mL)  Rinse mouth for 30 seconds before spitting out.  Use a tablespoon measure (15mL) whenever desired to help manage oral soreness.  Dilute with water if stinging occurs.

- Duraphat 5000ppm Sodium Fluoride toothpaste 1.1% DPF 153g.  Use 1cm amount to brush teeth three times a day before spitting out.
