Forest Holme Hospice

Forest HolmeForest Holme is a purpose-built specialist palliative care unit which is part of Poole Hospital.

The unit is situated a short distance from the main hospital and offers a tranquil setting for the care of patients and their families. It has facilities for outpatients, specialist nurses working both within the community and in the hospital, counselling support , fundraising, Lymphoedema and  teaching with 12 beds for inpatients on the ground floor.

It deals especially with the physical and psychological comfort of patients with complex needs and also provides support and advice to carers, family and friends.

Forest Holme takes its name from the Victorian house that originally stood on the site. The unit was dedicated by the late Roy Castle OBE on 3 July 1993, and was officially opened by the Lady Romsey on 9 January 1995.

Our philosophy

Our philosophy is to provide a welcoming, safe environment which makes excellent Relative loungecare available to people with serious illnesses, and to provide support to their families.

The care is individually tailored to meet the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of all those coming into contact with staff based at Forest Holme, in order that all kinds of distress be reduced to a minimum.

Care is given by a courteous and appropriately qualified team of doctors, nurses and other staff.

We aim to restore as much choice and control to individuals themselves as is feasible within the constraints of their illness.

We welcome referrals from GPs, hospital doctors, ward staff and community nurses.  We would always expect referrals to have been discussed with the individual.

If you wish you can refer yourself to the service. We encourage you to speak to your doctor or nurse if you would like to be seen by the palliative care team.

Referrals can be made by letter or telephone, or can be made on one of our referral forms. If the referral is urgent we encourage you to phone or fax.

Our catchment area

Our normal catchment area is Poole, Wimborne and the Purbecks. Elsewhere in Dorset, similar services are provided through the Macmillan Unit in Christchurch for those living in Bournemouth, Ferndown and surrounding areas, and by Weldmar Hospicecare Trust for residents of North and West Dorset.

Where we are

Forest Holme is located on Seldown Road, a few minutes' walk away from the main Poole Hospital building. Our full address is:

Forest Holme has its own small car park but parking is very limited. We would ask you to be considerate of the needs of others, and to encourage friends to park in one of the nearby pay-and-display car parks at the hospital or the swimming pool, so that close family members can park on site.

Both the rail station and the bus station are within walking distance for the reasonably fit: allow about five minutes to walk up Seldown Lane if you are coming by bus and an extra five minutes if you are travelling by train.

The front door of Forest Holme is usually kept locked for security reasons so when you arrive please ring the door bell and someone will let you in.
