Assessment and day case unit

This nine-bed unit is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All acute paediatric referrals from general practitioners (GPs), the emergency department and members of the primary care team, are managed through this unit.

The unit is used to assess and initiate treatment for children before they are either admitted or sent home with an appropriate care plan and telephone support from senior nursing staff.

Children also attend a separate day care unit on Elmwood ward for day case treatment. This area is open Monday to Friday 8am-6pm.

Within this area children attend for:

  • Blood tests booked through their GP/consultant
  • Specialist endocrine tests
  • MRI
  • DMSA scans
  • Therapy infusions
  • Blood transfusions
  • Treatment via injections
  • Review of previous treatments

There is also a nurse practitioner who has a specialist role in paediatric allergies based within the day care area, who carries out individual allergy testing via her own clinics.
