Standards of food, hygiene and patient privacy at Poole Hospital have been rated amongst the best in the country in findings published today by the National Patient Safety Agency. Poole was one of just 40 sites to receive ‘excellent’ scores in all three areas assessed in the Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) programme, placing the Hospital in the top 5% in England.

PEAT teams consist of nurses, matrons, doctors, catering, domestic service managers, as well as groups of patients, their representatives and members of the public. In assessing standards at Poole, the team looked at levels of cleanliness, infection control measures, aspects of the environment such as decoration, maintenance and lighting, and the standard and nutritional value of food offered to patients.

Poole Hospital received scores of 5 out of 5 and a rating of ‘excellent’ in all three areas – Environment, Food and Privacy & Dignity – that were assessed by the 2010 team. This is the third year in a row that the standard of food at Poole has been rated as ‘excellent’ by PEAT; the Hospital improved on its 2009 PEAT ratings of ‘good’ for Environment and Privacy & Dignity.

Martin Smits, Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Poole Hospital said: “We are committed to treating our patients in a clean, safe environment at Poole, and are delighted that the PEAT assessment has recognised the high standards we maintain.

“We understand how important the hospital environment is to our patients, and are particularly pleased that the standard of food at Poole has once again been rated ‘excellent’ by PEAT. Our staff work very hard to look after all our patients’ needs, and should be very proud of this achievement.”

Health minister Simon Burns MP said: “Patients rightly expect to be treated in clean surroundings, with good food and with respect for their privacy. It is reassuring to see that hospitals are building on the improvements it has already made in these key areas of patient experience.”
