Patients rate cancer care at Poole Hospital the best in the South

The care and support available to patients with cancer at Poole Hospital is amongst the best in the UK, according to the new report
Poole Hospital provides the best care in the South to patients with cancer, according to new data released today by Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Hospital ranked seventh in the UK in a league table compiled by the charity, and was the highest ranking hospital in the south of England.
The table was compiled from the results of the last Cancer Patient Experience Survey, conducted by the Department of Health. The survey asked patients to rate the care and support they received while being treated in hospital, from initial referral to discharge.
David Crosby, General Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Central and South West England says, “We congratulate Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for achieving some of the best results in the recent patient experience survey. We know that the support and care people receive is as important as their actual treatment, and can make all the difference between coping with cancer and finding it a real struggle. For example, being told about financial help that is available, or being provided with really good quality information about their cancer and its treatment.”
Chris Bown, Chief Executive of Poole Hospital said: “This new data is a fantastic reflection of the hard work and commitment of our staff in giving patients the best quality care. Poole Hospital treats people with cancer from across the county, and we are delighted that our high standards of care have been recognised in this way.”
Patients rated the care at Poole particularly highly in the following categories:
- Appropriate support given to patients in making decisions about treatment
- Good access to, and support given by, Cancer Nurse Specialists
- Good quality consultations and management of patient contact by hospital doctors
- Good standard of communication and understanding by ward staff
- Strong management of pain control
- Good quality information given at discharge
- High quality of hospital care as a day patient/outpatient
- Overall NHS care
